Many reasons to like 1600 - The Calgary Sun - Feb 12th, 2011
At first I thought Google maps might have once again led me astray.
Head south on 14 St. to 90 Ave. and turn right.
Check.
Should be right there, but all I saw was the gas station and Safeway with a massive parking lot in between at Glenmore Landing.
Until the sign appeared like a beacon — 1600 Bier Haus.
Tucked in the northwest corner of the complex, the exterior may be a bit hard to see, but the interior is anything but.
One of the larger pubs you’ll find in the city, there’s ample seating at 1600, which came in handy on Super Bowl Sunday.
My brunch mate Jacqueline was yet to arrive, so our server, Kelly, showed me to a booth in the Canmore section, which, she pointed out, was aptly named, as it was out of the way from the rest of the pub and had a great view of the mountains — well, the hill out back anyway.
With tea ordered for me and coffee for Jacqueline, we began perusing the menu, which has all the usual items such as the classic bacon and eggs, omelettes, french toast — which can also come stuffed with bananas or strawberries.
There’s also a few things on there for health eaters, such as the vegetarian benedict with spinach and tomatoes, the carb-conscious breakfast of omega eggs, fruit, sausage and bacon, or the spa breakfast of fresh fruit, yogurt, granola and toast.
I went with a chicken sausage frittata ($10) made with roasted red peppers and honey roasted garlic and served with toast.
Presentation wasn’t a strong point of the dish as it was pretty much just a frittata on a plate — a little garnish or piece of fruit to add some colour would go a long way — but the eggs were fluffy and it was quite tasty.
Jacqueline tried the steak and eggs ($15) served with two eggs, hashbrowns and toast.
The steak was an impressive size — nothing salisbury about that chunk of meat — and the hashbrowns were made fresh.
Quite filling indeed.
As for the ambiance, 1600 has a similar slightly upscale feel as 1410, and for good reason, it’s owned by the same people who run that and Classic Jack’s on 17 Ave. S.W.
The floor is made of slightly industrial-looking tile, which I actually think looks better than wood and the large red light fixtures add a splash of colour.
Our server, Kelly, was friendly and attentive, going so far as to bring me their entire selection of teas when I couldn’t decide.

July 23, 2010 - Likes it - Interesting and delicious. Nice beer selection for flavor and international choices. Not an overwhelming selection which made it easy. Had the French Dip- excellent beef and a lovely rosemary au jus- and the bison-beef burger - a thick, juicy, big mouth burger. Strong flavor from the Caesar salad, very enjoyable. Music was a bit on the loud side, but overall a great place. Give it a try if you're nearby!
"Trendy, fair prices, tasty" May 4th 2010
Had the 1600 burger and my 2 sides were pilaff and fish chowder. Fresh handmade burgers, tasty, well worth the price. Pilaff had a peppery kick to it and the fish chowder was tasty and had big chunks of seafood in it. Good crowd, trendy, decent beers, more on tap would be better. I will be back.......
"The selection of draft was amazing!" April 2010
The 9 cent wings on Wednesday night were delicious and the selection of draft was amazing. Only issue was the 25 minute wait to sit 5 of us, but once we were seated, everything was excellent. - WE NOW HAVE ONLINE RESERVATIONS - avoid the wait for your table!
"I would definately go here again!" December 2009
Went here on a sunday afternoon. The atmosphere in this place is great! It's like a nice restaurants, mixed with a local pub. The service was great and the wings were delicious, crunchy on the outside, but they were still really juicy and flavorful. Also they had drink specials that seemed pretty decent. I would definitely go here again!
"Awesome value" August 2009
1600's Ahu Tuna Salad has become a mainstay in my diet....so great and amazing value. For what you get $16 is a cheap price....seeing as how many other places with similar dishes charge much more. I've always been impressed with 1600's service especially at lunchtime and the lounge has a good vibe.
'What a start" 2009
I heard about the opening of 1600 Bier Haus at Glenmore Landing from a friend. I enjoy the vibe at 1410 (it's sister location) so I thought I'd check it out. Good thing I decided to go early 'cause there wasn't a spare seat shortly after 6pm. I was really impressed with the look of the space, fresh and modern with this cool mural on one of the walls. The service was a little slow but for a packed room with new staff it wasn't bad. Oh yeah, and the staff is easy on the eyes which helps. Food portions and selection were excellent. I loved the great selection of beers...over 100 I think. I'll definitely be back to try again
